The past few years have been challenging for Aotearoa, with extreme weather events, rising cost OF LIVING, and political divides affecting us all. Now more than ever, we could all use a reminder to come together.

That’s why this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) theme is:

Community is… what we create together.

Recent research revealed that Cyclone Gabrielle and other extreme weather events have impacted people’s wellbeing – and showed what has helped them get through. Findings revealed that community is the key to getting through tough times.

Community looks different for everyone. It’s about connecting with others to create something together. This MHAW, we’re encouraging all Team Ritchies to define, build, and celebrate their communities, at work and in their personal lives. There’s plenty of information available on the MHAW website at https://mentalhealth.org.nz/ and hopefully your team organised some activities during Mental Health Awareness Week to make that sense of community stronger.

It can be as simple as a chat over coffee with a mate, or a full-blown depot event with as many people as possible involved. The point is to come together as a community and, if you want to, to discuss issues that may be on your mind. It’s about support and caring, about offering a hand up, not a hand out, and making sure anyone who might be struggling feels they are not alone.
